How You Can Overcome the Cybersecurity Skills Gap
Cybercrime is an inevitable problem that is costing businesses a lot of money. The cybersecurity skills gap has been a problem for years and is not going away any time soon, simply because demand continues to outrun supply. Over the past few years, there has been an exponential increase in open cybersecurity positions. Adopting new technologies gives attackers an additional opportunity to widen their hack strategies. This digital acceleration leads security practitioners to juggle numerous complex tasks, making it difficult to develop and broaden their security practices and skill sets. This article at Raconteur by Emma Woollacott discusses how firms can tackle the cybersecurity skills gap.
Cybersecurity Skills Gap Survey Results
In March 2022, 39% of companies acknowledged being the victims of cyberattacks or data security breaches. In the Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2022, it is recommended that organizations bolster their defenses.
In the eight years leading up to 2021, the number of unfilled cybersecurity jobs increased from 1 million to 3.5 million globally, according to research by Cybersecurity Ventures. Clar Rosso, CEO of the non-profit security training and certification group (ISC)2, claims that the UK’s cybersecurity workforce shrunk by 65,000 last year, creating a lack of 33,000 employees. She highlights how difficult it has been to recruit cybersecurity personnel with the necessary expertise. She also says that inadequate risk assessment, a delay in patching vital systems, and other factors have led to a rise in cybersecurity threats.
Tackling the Cybersecurity Skills Gap
According to Immersive Labs CEO James Hadley, a former cybersecurity trainer for government agencies and financial institutions, there are perception gaps blinding employers besides the cybersecurity skills gap. To find a unicorn candidate, they have an extensive list of educational requirements, certifications, and skills. This usually leaves employers with a very narrow candidate pool to choose from. He advises focusing on trainable employees instead.
Rosso recommends widening your search criteria for recruiting cybersecurity professionals. She suggests approaching universities that provide education for cybersecurity certification and upskilling your existing employees. Increasing the cyber literacy of employees across the organization is imperative. This cyber training ensures employees know how to prevent and react to cyberattacks to control damage and minimize impacts by following best practices.
